Our farm grew by 100 trees, shrubs, and plants!

It's not just humans and domestic animals who live here on the farm - this land is home to thousands of year-round and migratory birds and water fowl, black tail deer, rabbits, beavers, river otters, mink, muskrats, and more. So when Farmland Advantage approached us about improving and protecting the riparian zone around Morningstar Creek, we were all ears!

What is Farmland Advantage?

IAF’s Farmland Advantage program partners with farmers and ranchers in BC to protect and conserve critical lands, streams, and habitats. By elevating the role of farmers and celebrating their efforts, they help them care for their land so it can continue to work hard for all of us.

What improvements were made on Morningstar Farm?

Morningstar Creek runs the length of our farm. This small waterway supports a host of wildlife and provides habitat for numerous aquatic and terrestrial species. Here's how the area was improved:

Invasive species removal: Invasive species can alter habitats and hamper essential ecosystem functions. They compete with beneficial native plants for nutrients, water, and space - so by removing them, native plants are given a chance to establish instead.

Native Species Planting: Native plants are designed to thrive in their natural habitats and are deeply interconnected with native animals and pollinators. Native plants are vital components of healthy and resilient ecosystems and are often hardier, requiring less water and maintenance once established. By planting native species, the program aims to improve biodiversity and wildlife habitat.

Bank Stabilization: As the newly planted flora establishes roots, it will help to stabilize the creek bank and protect it from erosion.

As these native plant species grow and flourish, they will protect the creek bank from erosion, promote biodiversity, and provide shelter for the numerous species that call this ecosystem home.

Thanks to Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC and Farmland Advantage for making Morningstar Creek (a.k.a. "the pond") a better place!
