Long, slender "cheese straws" are baked until crunchy and served with dip

Cheese Straws

Cheese straws are easy to make, and only require a few simple ingredients. Serve these with with your favourite dip for a fun appetizer.

Ingredients

  • Egg wash: 1 egg, beaten with 1 tsp water
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 cup finely grated Mt. Moriarty or Old Smokey cheese
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • Salt to taste

Directions

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Shred cheese and set aside.
  2. If using a prepared puff pastry sheet, set it on a lightly floured surface. Otherwise, roll out the pastry to a roughly 10”x10” square no more than ⅛ inch thick.
  3. Lightly brush the entire surface with egg wash (this acts as a “glue” to hold everything together). Spread prepared cheese on half the pastry. Sprinkle with paprika or your seasoning of choice. Add a sprinkle of salt, if desired.
  4. Fold the puff pastry in half over the cheese & press firmly. With a rolling pin, apply light pressure and roll until everything holds firmly in place.
  5. Using a sharp knife, pizza cutter, or dough scraper, slice the sheet long ways into ½ inch strips. Twist them a few times and set them on a lined baking sheet; press the ends down firmly to keep them from untwisting.
  6. Brush each twist with remaining egg wash. Pop the tray into the fridge while the oven preheats to 400F/200C. Once the oven is up to temperature, bake them for 20-30 min or until they take on a golden glossy finish.
  7. Once cooled, serve them as a snack or appetizer with your choice of dip.
